About Gatlin Crawford

Jackson Gatlin Crawford (b. 1999 in Eutin, Germany) is a contemporary and conceptual artist based in Hamburg. While originally known for his layered oil paintings that investigate psychological processes through vibrant abstraction, his current practice extends beyond traditional media to include conceptual works, symbolic editions, and experimental formats.

Crawford’s work is deeply rooted in psychoanalytic and philosophical theory. Drawing from Freud, Lacan, Žižek, and others, he explores emotional conflict, identity, and the social structures that shape perception and subjectivity. His artistic process often begins with personal or clinical insights, which he then transforms into visual or conceptual formats—whether on canvas, in sculptural form, or through immaterial gestures.

In recent works, Crawford has expanded his practice into projects that test the boundaries of materiality, authorship, and value. These include symbolic surfaces, conceptual “non-objects,” and certificates as artworks, inviting viewers to confront the nature of ownership and absence in contemporary culture.

Through this evolving practice, Crawford maintains a consistent focus: the human psyche—its conflicts, defenses, and fragile constructions—remains at the center of his inquiry, regardless of medium.
